GreenPower Motor Company Inc: An Inside Look at This North American Electric Bus Manufacturer

According to a recent market study, the electric bus market is projected to grow by 61.03 thousand units from 2022 to 2027, with a CAGR of 9.23%. This growth can be attributed to various factors, such as decreasing battery prices, advancements in technology to minimize downtime, and government initiatives promoting the adoption of electric buses.

As the market becomes increasingly competitive, larger companies are acquiring smaller regional players to expand their global presence. Additionally, new entrants into the market will further intensify competition among existing players throughout the forecast period.

GreenPower Motor Company Inc. specializes in developing electric vehicles for commercial markets. In 2014, GreenPower introduced the EV350 transit bus, a zero-emission vehicle featuring electric drive and battery technologies, a lightweight chassis, and a low-floor body.

This zero-emission bus incorporates electric drive and battery technologies, a lightweight chassis, and a low-floor body design. GreenPower’s commitment to innovation is evident through its use of a custom battery management system and its proprietary Flex Power system for drive motors.

To ensure top-quality components, they collaborate with renowned suppliers like Siemens for drive motors, Knorr for brakes, ZF for axles, and Parker for dash and control systems. By adopting an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) approach, GreenPower can fulfil operators’ specific requirements while facilitating maintenance and warranty procedures with standard parts availability.

In the fall of 2016, GreenPower introduced Synapse, a range of all-electric school and shuttle buses. The Synapse lineup includes a 30 feet (9.1 m) model with seating for 37 passengers and a 36.5 feet (11.1 m) model accommodating up to 49 passengers.

Notably, the California Air Resources Board approved the Synapse under its Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project, enabling purchasers to receive an incentive of $95,000 along with existing incentives. Demonstrating their commitment to sustainable transportation, GreenPower sold eleven Synapse buses in August 2017 to six schools within the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District and South Coast Air Quality Management District in California.

In 2018, it launched the EV Star minibus, which offers impressive travel distances ranging from 150 to 200 miles (240 to 320 km) per charge. Charging can be done through an eight-hour session with a J1172 Level 2 charger or via a DC fast charger that takes just ninety minutes. Multiple interior configurations are available for customization, including one accommodating seventeen passengers.

In 2021, GreenPower established an exclusive agreement with Forest River, a renowned cutaway minibus and recreational vehicle manufacturer. Under this partnership, the company supplies its EV Star cabs and chassis to Forest River for integration into its products.
