Audi’s latest electric vehicle (EV) marvel, the SQ8 e-tron, emerges as a refined successor to the Q8 e-tron, boasting a tri-motor setup that enhances its performance. The SQ8 e-tron, available in both standard quattro and Sportback versions, represents Audi’s continued commitment to electrification, following the e-tron SUV (2018), e-tron GT models (2020), and Q4 e-tron (2022).
Innovative Design and Technology
The SQ8 e-tron displays significant improvements over the Q8 e-tron, especially in battery and motor design. By optimizing the battery’s architecture, Audi increased its capacity to 114 kWh, offering nearly 20 kWh more than its predecessor. This enhancement, along with a 20% range increase, allows the SQ8 e-tron to travel over 300 miles on a single charge.
Aerodynamics plays a crucial role in the SQ8 e-tron’s design, featuring a completely revamped suspension, steering, and control modules. Innovations such as revamped air curtains, new wheel spoilers, and dimpled fiberglass underbody cover contribute to a 6% reduction in drag. Additionally, Audi offers unique 9.6 kW AC charging points on both sides of the vehicle, with a 19.2 kW upgrade option.
Performance Specifications
Both the standard and Sportback versions of the 2024 SQ8 e-tron are equipped with three asynchronous electric motors, delivering a peak horsepower of 496 hp and a torque of 718 lb.-ft. in Boost Mode. The EV offers fast charging capabilities, achieving an 80% charge in just 31 minutes. Despite its sturdy build, weighing over 6,100 pounds, the SQ8 e-tron offers agile driving experiences, comparable to smaller vehicles.
Driving Experience
Audi’s SQ8 e-tron stands out for its quietness, surpassing even the insulated A8. This quiet ride is complemented by a sporty acceleration, although it feels more like a dual-motor EV than a tri-motor. The interior boasts a luxurious design, featuring a leather handle in the center console and an easily visible head-up display (HUD). However, the user experience (UX) requires multiple taps to switch drive modes, which could be streamlined for easier access.
Market Positioning and Pricing
While the SQ8 e-tron offers a slightly sportier version of the Q8 e-tron, its reduced range in exchange for powertrain performance may not appeal to all. Priced at $90,995 for the quattro version and $93,795 for the Sportback version, the SQ8 e-tron is expected to hit showrooms in Q4 of this year, offering luxury and comfort at high speeds
